Mitochondria biological animation project

Reading time: 3 minutes

Introduction

Our team faced a new breathtaking task. In mitochondria biological animation project, we had to illustrate an accurate 3D prototype of a human cardiomyocyte mitochondria. It is one of the most complex organelles in human cells. To do that we had to do research which helped us show every detail. This video demonstrates our work.

Mitochondria and their functions

A mitochondrion is a unique cell organelle surrounded by a double-membrane system. The diameter of mitochondria varies from 0.75 to 3 μm, but shape and size differ a lot. They are invisible under a microscope without special stain. These organelles are the energy supplier and storehouse of the cell. They act as energy producers, which is stored in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).Moreover, it is also one of the most prominent places in the cell where free radicals are made and scavenged. Besides, being the energy supplier, these organelles are associated with other processes like cellular differentiation, signalling and apoptosis. It also controls the cell growth and cycle. Their number can be varied depending on the organism, cell type and tissue. Furthermore, multicellular organisms may lack them in some cells (differentiated erythrocytes, for example). Diseases, such as cardiac dysfunction, heart failure, mitochondrial disorders and autism are associated with mitochondria.

Structure

A mitochondrion is a membranous organelle, unlike other organelles, consisting of two separate bilipid membranes (inner and outer) separated by an intermembranous space. Cristae originate from the folds of the inner membrane, which dive into the matrix forming many compartments. Each of these compartments plays a different role. The matrix with the inner membrane folds are the major functional components of mitochondria. Another peculiarity of this organelle is that they have their own ribosomes and DNA floating in the matrix.
